2023 Trends in Commercial Design
Commercial design is always changing and evolving. When updating your space, or building new, think beyond the next five years; commercial spaces are not typically updated as frequently as trends change. Be selective and mindful of the trends while prioritizing functionality and efficiency within your space. Here are some trends in commercial design we will see more of in 2023.
Sustainability
Sustainability is always on trend and particularly important. There are many ways to make this a priority within your space. Consider using energy efficient lighting and low VOC paint and finishes throughout your space. Utilize design elements made from recycled materials and other natural elements. Prioritizing natural materials that have minimal impact to the environment will never go out of style. We are seeing an even bigger emphasis on companies increasing their efforts to be environmentally friendly. Expect this trend to stick around for the long haul.
Color
Warmer tones are big for the commercial market. Variations of orange and yellow are trending, and the darker green colors remain exceedingly popular. Remember to consider your brand and the overall look you are trying to achieve. Be bold and play with color in accent furniture or design accessories. Choose colors that complement the existing theme in your space.
The 2023 Pantone color of the year is ‘viva magenta’ and is described by Pantone as a “crimson red tone that presents a balance between warm and cool, a hybrid color that represents both the physical and virtual in our multi-dimensional world.” Don’t be afraid to use a pop of color in your design scheme!
Biophilic spaces
With a greater focus on overall well-being, creating spaces that bring in nature elements help promote positivity and wellness. Think of bringing outside nature indoors. Biophilic spaces utilize a variety of natural materials like wood and stone, natural lighting, living plants and even moss walls. Such elements help invigorate anyone who steps foot inside.
Functional artwork
Think art-with-a-purpose: Both visually pleasing and practical. It looks good and has a functional purpose within the space. Examples of this could include mounted shelving units, creative light fixtures and even one-of-a-kind furniture pieces. This dual-purpose focus ties into the sustainability trend.
Open layouts with flexible spaces
Work environments continue to evolve and many businesses find themselves with employees in a hybrid work situation. Coming off a few years working from the comforts of home, employees like options. There will be replacements for traditional desks and chairs, more open environments that promote collaboration, and dedicated spaces for privacy if needed.
