Tips for developing a successful relationship with your general contractor

Developing a strong relationship with your general contractor is crucial to the success of your construction project. Here are some tips that will help ensure your project is completed on time, within budget and beyond your expectations.
1. Communication is key. Establish clear lines of communication with your contractor right from the start. Regularly scheduled meetings, progress reports and open communication will help you stay informed and on top of any issues that may arise. Maintaining honest communication throughout your project will help everyone stay on the same page. Be transparent and ask questions when in doubt.
2. Set clear and realistic expectations. Clearly communicate your project goals, priorities and expectations, including timelines and budget. This will help your contractor understand what you are looking for and prevent any confusion. Realize that construction projects can be unpredictable and delays can happen. Set reasonable timelines and budget expectations with your contractor to avoid misunderstandings and disappointments down the line.
3. Choose the right contractor and respect their expertise. Before hiring your general contractor, make sure to do your research. Look for contractors with a proven track record and positive references. Once you have made your selection, respect the fact that your contractor is a professional with years of experience in the industry. Treat your contractor as a partner, not just a service provider. Listen to their advice and input, and work together to find solutions to any challenges that may arise. Provide timely feedback and be open to suggestions they may have.
4. Be organized. Keep all the project documents, plans and contracts in one place and easily accessible to both you and your contractor. This will help avoid confusion and delays in the project.
5. Be flexible. Be open to changes and adjustments to the project plan if necessary. Your contractor may encounter unforeseen issues that require adjustments, and being flexible will help keep the project moving forward smoothly.
By following these tips, you can establish a positive, collaborative and successful relationship with your general contractor, ensuring that your construction project meets your expectations and is completed on time and within budget. Of course this responsibility goes both ways; your selected contractor should follow these tips as well!
